How the UK generates its electricity is a central question for our energy security and affordability. The UK still produces a significant amount of its electricity from fossil fuels, particularly methane gas from the North Sea, with the price of domestic UK oil and gas dictated by volatile international markets. We cannot drill our way out of the climate crisis and tax payer subsidies to rich fossil fuel companies makes no sense when renewable energy is cheaper to produce, cleaner and not exposed to large oil price swings. Instead, let’s ramp up local and national renewable energy projects and the good job opportunities that come with them.
