Our story
The Hungerford Environmental Action Team (HEAT) is a local community group focused on community and environmental issues. HEAT has overseen a range of sustainability-focused initiatives including reducing the use of single-use plastics, a local repair café, tree planting, and cycling initiatives. A key focus for us is carbon reduction, and we are currently working on a program to make it more economical for residents to install solar panels. We are also holding events that help residents and businesses learn from each other about new climate-friendly technologies – such as a recent electric vehicle day.
HEAT began in 2006 after a screening of 'An Inconvenient Truth', the Al Gore film, was organised for members of Hungerford Town Council. Following a strong expression of public interest on issues around climate change at that year's Annual Parish Meeting, HEAT was established and we haven't looked back!
We believe that addressing the climate emergency is not a choice but something we all need to be involved in right now. The sooner we get on and do it, the sooner we can make positive change happen.
Our advice
Understand your impact – Our main advice is to start by understanding what your current impact is and where your emissions are coming from. Once you have the problem laid out, you can work out how to tackle it and create an action plan.
