YAS' story
The NHS is working to eliminate carbon by 2045 and has set a target of 2040 to eliminate scope 1 and 2 emissions. This will be achieved by eliminating waste and reducing electricity and gas consumption.
As part of this mission, Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) has spearheaded a pioneering project, in which around 35 to 45% of the vehicle's energy comes from hydrogen, rather than diesel. This cuts carbon dioxide emissions by the same amount.
In addition YAS' dual-fuel fleet of vehicles, the YAS has multiple different initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, which include:
- Installing solar panels on more than 100 ambulances to keep their batteries charged,
- Aerodynamic light bars, greener tyres and hydrogen-electric support vehicles.
The YAS was the first ambulance service in the country to introduce hydrogen support vehicles and has set itself the challenge of making the entire fleet as eco-friendly as possible over the next few years. The YAS has also won several national awards for its environmental initiatives.
