Our story

by Michael Cecil from Rathlin Island Community Interest - Zero Carbon Tour interview

As a community, we have a 10-year plan to decarbonise our entire island and turn it 100% green. One of the biggest carbon footprints on the island is the ferry – if we can remove its reliance on diesel, which we use at the minute, and transition to hydrogen, then we take away a big part of our carbon footprint. Other projects include decarbonising heating and transport on the island – we can heat houses with hydrogen and supply the island with electric cars and bikes, insulate houses, install solar panels, and so on.

Our advice

Look at ways in which you can decarbonise – we on Rathlin are hoping to generate our own hydrogen on the island from renewable sources such as wind, and that hopefully will be enough to power transport on Rathlin, as well as to heat homes and generate energy for some of the fishing boats.
